SaskAbilities Launches Yorkton Film Festival with Video Screening

On May 21st, SaskAbilities proudly kicked off the Yorkton Film Festival (YFF) by premiering both the provincial and Yorkton region 75th anniversary videos. The event was celebrated with a lively community barbecue that featured amazing food and a local band that had everyone on their feet dancing to mark the special occasion.

With both videos featuring familiar faces from the Yorkton Branch, staff and clients were encouraged to invite friends and family to the festivities. Bags of popcorn in hand, attendees were treated to a full theatre experience at the Yorkton Branch thanks to YFF. “It was so much fun! I was excited because it turned out really, really well,” emphasizes Tenille, a proud client at the Yorkton Branch, delighted to share her moment on the big screen with her parents and siblings. “I’m famous!” she exclaims with a big smile.

The Yorkton Branch was happy to welcome over 100 people to the event, including community leaders, to share in the screening. “Everyone here at the Yorkton Branch continues to be so grateful for our community partnerships. For something as long-running and well-known as the Yorkton Film Festival to approach us and include SaskAbilities in their festival and activities was a real honour. This is a true reflection of how lucky we are to have the type of community support that we do here in Yorkton,” expresses Deana Stroshein, Community Relations Coordinator.

While the idea to include the 75th anniversary videos was suggested by YFF, Executive Director Randy Goulden was quick to highlight the relationship between SaskAbilites and the festival. “Understanding that SaskAbilities has a long-standing partnership with the Yorkton Film Festival, day program clients join us two or three times a week to watch films. So, this was a continuation of what we already do together,” shares Randy. “The Yorkton Film Festival is about community, film, and storytelling. With SaskAbilities celebrating 75 years in our province and the festival marking 78 years, it felt fitting to celebrate together. What was created wasn’t just a film screening; it was an event that brought people together to celebrate, connect, and enjoy each other. This is at the heart of our community – pride in contributing to a better quality of life for everyone.”
