Shaping Inclusive Communities Podcast: Episode 2

Episode 2: Shona’s Story: Advocacy, Growth, and the Long Game of Parenting

In our second episode of Shaping Inclusive Communities podcast, host Aleks Hoeber, Regional Director, Yorkton Branch, talks with Shona Switzer. Shona is a devoted mom, registered nurse, and lifelong advocate. She shares her journey of raising twin boys diagnosed with autism. We learn key lessons she learned about advocacy, skill-building, and creating independence for her sons. She discusses the importance of building support networks and pursuing early education. Her story moves from early skill development to building a housing model for her adult sons. Shona offers practical insights, heartfelt wisdom, and hope for families navigating similar paths.

If you are new to our podcasts, the idea grew out of the success of the Shaping Inclusive Communities conference held earlier this year which brought together individuals with lived experience, service providers, families, and community partners for two days of dialogue, learning, and inspiration. With over 200 questions submitted by attendees, the SaskAbilities team saw a clear opportunity to continue those conversations in a more accessible, ongoing way.

The Shaping Inclusive Communities podcast will feature a range of voices including individuals experiencing disability, program leaders, and professionals committed to advancing inclusion. Future episodes will explore topics that matter to the SaskAbilities community, such as adaptive technology, recreation, employment, and accessibility.
