Program Overview
The Cognitive Disability Strategy (CDS) was established in 2005 as a short-term intervention to support individuals with cognitive disabilities and their families. It was developed to provide supports where mainstream services or programs are not able to respond.
CDS has two service streams;
- Behavioral supports and planning which are provided by Cognitive Disability Consultants
- Flexible Funding Benefit. This benefit is based on the individual’s assessed level of need and income
- Funding can be used to meet unmet needs such as mentorship, respite, medical travel, equipment
The Cognitive Disability Consultant enhances the knowledge and skills of families and services providers in meeting the needs of persons with cognitive disabilities who have significant behavioral and developmental challenges. The consultant builds community capacity and prepares service providers and families to work with children and youth with cognitive disabilities through training and specific case consultation, including direct treatment and intervention.
