Program Overview

The Cognitive Disability Strategy (CDS) was established in 2005 as a short-term intervention to support individuals with cognitive disabilities and their families. It was developed to provide supports where mainstream services or programs are not able to respond.

Funding provided through CDS is for individuals with unmet needs related to their cognitive disability. Funding levels are determined by an income test and needs assessment. Requests for flexible funding must be related to the cognitive disability, not available through another service or funding source and recommended by a professional and support team.

The Cognitive Disability Consultant enhances the knowledge and skills of families and services providers in meeting the needs of persons with cognitive disabilities who have significant behavioral and developmental challenges.  The consultant builds community capacity and prepares service providers and families to work with children and youth with cognitive disabilities through training and specific case consultation, including direct treatment and intervention.
